A while ago I wrote a post on my blog about growing your own veg and why. Well Autumn is here and we started harvesting ๐
Because we planted a ton of tomatoes and because we used various types of seeds and because we planted the seeds in batches we’re now harvesting various types of tomatoes in batches (batches might be too much – think every few days we’re harvesting enough tomatoes to make a salad for the four of us)
Because we did not spray them with anything some of them have a higher protein content than they should (think worms ๐ ) others like leftovers after a feast (slugs, mice, who knows … ) but most of them are ok and not just that … they taste amazing.
First salad we made using our own tomatoes felt like having a revelation … I almost forgot how ripe tomatoes taste like … not to mention … the children love them so I’d say this project was a success and next year we’ll definitely do it again.
There is another good thing that happened in the process … our country of origin being Romania, we have a few recipes for pickles that include green tomatoes (as in NOT ripe) – an ingredient which cannot be bought from the supermarket ๐
Conclusion: Grow your own if you can because it makes a BIG difference.
