After our last visit to Paul & Michael, during which the children got to play games and do some “coding” in “Scratch” we noticed how excited they were about doing stuff at the computer (I guess they realized the computer universe is huge) and while talking about this with Paul & Michael, my mind got set on the idea of getting them the latest generation of Pi computers and start building on that.
Paul had 2 Dell monitors that were sitting in a corner gathering dust which he decided to give to us (thanks Paul & Michael!) and as soon as I got home me and the Mrs started looking at prices for these things and decided to go with Pi 4 B (which in terms of resources is almost as powerful as a previous workstation i was working from about 3 – 4 years ago but about 3 – 4 times cheaper).
Pay day came and basket was full (2 x RPi starter kits with cables, chargers, monitor stand and some extras like a usb sata adaptor to attach an SSD to them for extra storage capacity ~ 180£ – 200£ ), placed the order and a few days later they were delivered to us.
Got them setup upstairs (in the children’s office 🙂 ) and installed the OS (Raspbian full) and a few extras like some plugins for the browser to get some protection from them pesky ads and adult content and let the children have a go at them.
Been a week already since we got them installed (coincided with the half-term break) and can tell you that they’ve been learning stuff like crazy … from changing background pictures and listening to their favorite songs to document editing and programming (in Scratch of course) so this was a good move.
Q: To Raspberry Pi or to NOT Raspberry Pi ? A: To ! 🙂
