MSc Dissertation

It’s 2023, September, and I’ve just submitted my dissertation report together with the presentation of the report.

In a previous post ( https://cristian.seceleanu.co.uk/2022/10/msc-year-2/ ) I left a hint about what I was considering for my dissertation ( storage … obviously) and now is the time to reveal it to the world.

My project is called: “A practical approach to predicting remaining useful
life of hard disk drives
” and you can find it online at: https://prul.seceleanu.co.uk/

In case you have not figured out what it is about based on its title the summary would be: try to predict when a HDD will die using machine learning. There is work in the field that uses all sorts of fancy techniques to prepare the data to get high accuracy but the only practical application that I found during the research phase of the project is from QNAP (see: https://www.qnap.com/en/software/da-drive-analyzer ) so I figured I could write a little proof of concept that’s not bound to some dedicated hardware.

I did not have too much time available to put everything together as I would have liked to (due to various happenings in my life on the personal front – all of them on the positive side but time consuming) but rest assured … with time the website will look better, the information will be presented better and the solution itself will get better.

If you’re feeling brave feel free to read my paper ( https://prul.seceleanu.co.uk/academic/dissertation-v2.pdf ), grab a copy of all the materials I posted on the website and the source code available in the repo and build a better version or join forces with me to build a better version – my goal is to make this available to everyone for free with no strings attached.

Enjoy!

PS. I know you can’t comment on my website, I disabled that functionality intentionally as I don’t trust WordPress with user input however as a human you should be able to easily find my contact details (replace the first dot in the url of this website with an at symbol and you can email me at that address).

PS2. The post is backdated as I did not want to post it before I officially submitted the work as it could have ended up being something else or nothing at all.

PS3. Fingers crossed I pass … results will be in October 31st 🙂
